Chirico Wins Outstanding Wrestler Award at Virginia Challenge Match
Senior Christain Chirico 160 lbs. won the outstanding wrestler award for the AA team this past weekend. Every year The Virgina Challenge sponsors a challenge match pitting the best from AAA against the best of AA from all across The Commonwealth.
There was a deep pool of talent at 160 lbs. in the AAA division this past season. Chirico who finished in 3rd place in the AA division was matched up against Torrance Brown a rising star from Salem High School. Brown finished 6th this past season and had his hopes set on upsetting Chirico.
In the early portions of the match Chirico took a 2-0 lead with a first period takedown. Brown managed a first period escape and closed the distance. Having choice in the second period Brown choose the down position and once again escaped to tie the score at 2-2.
At the edge of the mat Brown got in deep on a single leg attack. Chirico locked up tight with a body wrap as Brown continued to finish the manuever. Maintaining his composure Chirico continued to funk roll and improved his position with each wanning second until he popped out with the advantage and proceeded to take his opponent to his back for a five point scramble. Scoring an additional escape point Chirico emerged with a 8-2 victory.
The sramble was quite exciting and was a real crowd pleaser, enough to attract the attention of the judges who choose The Outstanding Wrestlers of the match.
Jacob Kingett of Forest Park was the recipient on the AAA side with his dominating tech fall win at the 3:20 mark of his match.
Chirico and Zimmerman to Compete in AA vs. AAA All Star Match
The Virginia Challenge will host the 11th Annual AA vs. AAA Challenge Match this weekend at Kecoughtan High School in Hampton, Virginia.
The event attempts to pit the best of AAA against the best of A, AA and VIS wrestlers in the state. A 3rd place finish at the state tournament earned Chirico a spot on the roster when the #1 and #2 finishers declined to compete.
Zimmerman (6th place 103) earned a spot as an alternate when a number of 112 lb. competititors either declined to attend or were unable to compete due to injuries. Justin jumped at the opportunity to compete despite giving up size and weight to his opponent.
Last year Christian Chirico wrestled up a weight class (160) to fill a vacancy in the line up and faced off against AAA 1st place finisher Adrin Taylor now wrestling at ODU.
Chirico said the experience was invaluable despite the loss. "I found out that I wasn't as far away from the top as I thought I was.The experience was a boost to my confidence and motivated me to acheive my goals this season.

Two Flucos Earn All State Honors
In his sophomore season 103 lb. Justin Zimmerman left his mark at The State AA Wrestling Tournament this past weekend in Salem, Virginia with a sixth place finish.
Aftering suffering a first round loss to eventual state runnerup Chase McDaniel of Cave Spring Justin reeled off three victories in a row defeating Tre Evans of Spotsylvania by pin at the 1:19 mark of the first round consolation match. In the consi round of eight Justin decisioned Richard Harrell of Tabb 5-2. In the consi quarters he then tech falled Cody Hammett of Amherst County 16-0.
In the consolation semis Justin had a rematch with Adam Lowe of Poquson. Lowe had defeated Justin earler in the season at the Riverbend Super 32 Tournament. Lowe was once again victorious and defeated Justin 7-1 and sent Zimmerman to the consolation 5-6 match against reigning Region II champ Taylor Swartz of Millbrook High School.
Zimmerman weathered the storm and was defeated 9-2 for a sixth place finish. Justin wrestled hard and gained invaluable experience ithis year at the state tournament. He has learned that he can hang with the frontrunners and can continue to excel.
At 160 lbs. Senior Christian Chirico had plenty to prove with his first trip to the big show. A week earlier Chirico had suffered his third loss of the season at the hands of Kenton Perez of Loudon County the eventual 2011 Region II Champ.
Wasting no time in the opening round Chirico scored a decisive win over returning state qualifier Lance Hawkins of Courtland 8-2.
In the championship round of eight Chirico faced against Region III #1 seed Quinton Youngblood of Rockbridge County. Dominating Youngblood on his feet and on the mat Chirico pinned Youngblood at the 4:46 mark of the match.
On day two Chirico drew Rich Eva of Christiansburg High School in the championship semi finals. Eva a two time and eventual three time state champ controlled the match and ultimately pinned Chirico at the 5:22 mark of their match.
Dropping into the consolation round Chirico remained focused on finishing as high as possible in third place. In the consi semis he met Aaron Willard the Region IV #2 seed and used little time to move onto the consi finals with a pin at the 1:42 mark.
Chirico could not have asked for more to cap off his best season. Earlier in the year he had beaten the top ranked wrestler at 160 lbs. in Region II Kenton Perez of Loudon County at The Riverbend Super 32 Tournament. In their regional semi finals match Perez defeated Chirico in overtime with a fourth period takedown and eventually won the regional tournament.
At the state tournament on the other side of the bracket Perez dropped in to the consolation round when he was defeated by Chris Tyree of Staunton River. A win over Eric Anderson of Culpepper advance Perez into the consi finals (3-4 match) against Chirico. This was a chance for redemption. Wasting little time Chirco scored a high crotch toe hanging takedown to take a 2-0 lead. Always tough on the mat Chirico used his leg riding technique to hold Perez down to end the period. In their preious match Perez had demonstrated an ability to stand and avoid Chirico's mat skills. The second period started with Perez having choice and choosing the down position. Riding legs Chirico continually thwarted any effort by Perez to escape. With the third period choice Chirico choose the down position and wasted little time to execute an escape to take a 3-0 lead. Chirco continued to pressure Perez on his feet and negated Perez's ability to score a takedown. Final score Chirico 3 Perez 0. Later when asked about his performance Chirico was pleased to have placed thrid and at the same time have the opportunity to avenge an earlier season loss.
Chirico finished the season with a record of 44-4 and a career record of 130 - 39. Christian has been accepted into the engineering programs at West Virginia University and North Carolina State University. He has yet to choose either school and is contemplating pursuing a collegiate wrestling career. For the past five years it has been a pleasure and an honor to watch Christian grow as a competitor and a human being. Coach Conner and Chirico will miss his presence in the future and wish him good luck and goodwill in all of his endeavors.

In the 160 lb. weight class Christian Chirico advance to the semi finals to face off against Kenton Perez of Loudon County. Earlier this season Chirico defeated Perez at The Riverbend Super 32, 9-7.
In their semi -finals rematch Chirco scored his first 2 points on a single leg toe sliding takedown at the line. Perez was strong from the bottom and continued to come to his feet as Chirico struggled to return him to the mat. This resulted in a stalling caution in the first period before Perez eventually escaped 2-1. Chirico defered in the second period and Perez choose the down position and escaped to tie the score 2-2. In the third Chirico choose down and managed to escape and began to fight off Perez's takedown attempts. A questionable stalling call with 30 seconds remaining tied the score and pushed the match to overtime. Perez wasted little time and shot a single leg take down Chirico fought it iff with a whizzer but was unable to thwart the attack and gave up the match ending takedown.
Chirico remained focused and defeated Kyle Barnett of Millbrook 7-1 to advance to the consi-finals were he defeated Max Strum of Fauquier 2-0 to finish 3rd.
Logan Walls faced a strong field of 189 lbers to advance with a 4th place finish. Riverbend Super 32 Results
The Flucos traveled to Fredericksburg , Virginia this weekend and competed in The Free Lance Star Super 32 Wrestling Tournament hosted by Riverbend High School .
It seemed as if everybody was there, 41 teams from across The Commonwealth from Blacksburg to the Beach District from D.C. to Hickory , N.C. heck Mr. Observer showed up and so did a set of baby triplets from Thomas Dale.
The tournament was organized into a 64 man bracket and was coordinated and run by one guy, the infamous Doug Sikora from Sikora Software Systems, The Paperless Tournament. Doug is the creator and founder of this amazing enterprise and travels all over the East Coast running large tournaments. When it was all said and done there were approximately 900 wrestling matches contested on six mats in two days, a grueling schedule for even seasoned tournament wrestlers with an outstanding field of participants.
At 152 pounds returning state champ and nationally ranked Blake Roulo was the clear frontrunner. Other wrestlers of note at this weight class were, Hamptons Tony Leonardi, Zach Morris of Albemarle , Harry van Trees of Westfield and Justin Spyers of Green Run. Morris lost a close match 5-3 to Roulo in the quarterfinals on a line call that would have sent the match to overtime. Ultimately Morris had a strong showing and placed fifth.
At 160 2x state champ and nationally ranked Cody Allala from Hopewell was the outstanding wrestler of the field. Second seed and state qualifier Brandon Diamond of Thomas Dale made it to the finals by pinning Christian Chirico in the semi finals. State placers and qualifiers Chris Tyree of Staunton River , Xavier Edwards of Matoaca, Lance Hawkins of Courtland and Kenton Perez of Loudon County rounded out the field.
Christian Chirico defeated the #1 ranked Region II 160 lb. Kenton Perez in an exciting 9-7 match to advance to the consi-semis. In the consi-semis Chirico faced off against Chris Tyree of Staunton River . Last year at the AA State Tournament Tyree finished 6 th . In deep on a late takedown Chirico was unable to convert and ultimately fell 5-4 in a highly contested bout.
At 103 #1 seed Justin Zimmerman improved upon his 7 th place finish last year and finished 5 th . Justin wrestled well but lost to Adam Lowe of Poquoson who has been ranked second in the state behind Taylor Swartz of James Wood. Zimmerman finished the weekend 4-2 and pushed his current record to 24-2.
At 189 Logan Walls turned in a sold performance showing he can win close matches. Logan finished the weekend with a 4-2 record finished 5 th at the tournament and pushed his record to 22-4
At 215 Ben Lacey placed 8 th quite an accomplishment for someone who is entering his second year of wrestling. Ben wrestled seven times and finished the weekend with a 4-3 record and pushed his current record to 20-3.
Of note other Central Virginia wrestlers Brandon Waller and Ramel Jenkins of Albemarle placed 7 th and 6 th respectively.
Coaches Conner and Chirico were pleased with the entire effort of the Fluco squad. We finished 19 th out of 41 teams with a total of 83 points, 40 points ahead of Jefferson District foe Louisa and 26 points ahead of Albemarle . More importantly is how the points were earned. Last year most of our team points were secured by champion Willie Crawford, this season a large number of our wrestlers made a contribution. Of the 51 matches that the Flucos competed in their overall record was 24-27.
The Flucos are back in action this coming weekend at Powhattan High School . Two years ago The Flucos won this tournament. Coming off dual team tournament wins at Western Albemarle and Madison The Flucos will attempt to make it three in a row at Powhattan.
Complete details of the tournament can be found at http://www.kapwrestling.net/ you will have to register it is free.

Flucos Defend 2nd Annual Albemarle Duals For the second weekend in a row The Flying Flucos Wrestling Team won a dual team tournament. Hosted at Western Albemarle High School the Flucos arrived as defending champions of the tournament and wasted little time on their way to five straight wins.
The Flucos first match was against last years finals opponent Albemarle. The match started at 189 and the Flucos reeled off 4 pins in a row to take a 24-0 lead. Albemarle forfeited both 112 and 119 which added to the point total and after the first six bouts Fluvanna lead 36-0.
The first Patriot points were scored by Brandon Waller at 125 lbs. as he pinned Nick Valentine at the 3:54 mark of their match. Solid performances were turned in by Martinez, Morris and Carlisle of Albemarle. Despite the effort Albemarle fell to The Flucos by a final score of 54-21.
In the second bout of the day Fluvanna met host Western Albemarle. Both squads filled all the weight classes and the Warriors showed up with visions of an upset. Once again starting off in the strength of their lineup the Flucos started off at 215 where Ben Lacey kept his undefeated streak alive and pinned M. Carter at the 1:35 mark of their bout. First year wrestler Darrien Carrington (285)is continuing to improve and supplied the Flucos with a six point pin at the :58 second mark of his match. The string was perpetuated by(103)) Justin Zimmerman as he bested A. Dickson to extend the team point total to 18-0. At 112 and 119 Skye Weirsma and Jake Mahaffey both produced pins to add another 12 points and extend the Fluvanna lead to 30-0. Western Albemarle earned their first points of the match as J. Epstein pinned Nick Valentine at the 3:20 mark of their match. A major by Goodbar a decision by Boggs and a pin by Hashisaki brought The Warriors into striking distance 30- 19. At 145 lbs. Devon Manifold produced a much needed pin and exteneded the Flucos lead to 36-19. The two teams traded pins at 152 and 160. The match of the dual slated newcomer Kai Shin against Logan Walls. Shin turned in a solid performance and pinned Walls at the 3:29 mark of their match. Final score Fluvanna 42 Western Albemarle 37.
Leaving holes in their lineup at 112, 125, 171 and 285 left Fort Defiance with little hope of a victory. The bout of the match was a seesaw battle at 152 lbs. Newcomer Keyon Golden (Flu) trade points with J. Meadows (Ft. Def) as the score ballooned to 25-20 in favor of Meadows. Golden continued to work and never gave up. In a final ditch effort Golden escaped and returned Meadows to the mat on his back and earned a pin at the 5:59 mark of the match. Final score Fluvanna 48 Fort Defiance 24.
In the fourth match of the day the Green Dragons of William Monroe arrived without Zach Cummings, Calvin Biescker or Adam Wisenborn. Unfortunately Wisenborn is lost for the season due to an injury. Also injured Biesecker and Cummings will return to their lineup later in the season. Fluvanna 48 William Monroe 22.
In the finals Fluvanna met up with a tough young squad coached by Rick Palmer representing Waynesboro High School. The Little Giants came out fired up and attacked the Flucos viciously. Reeling off four victories in a row from 112 to 130 Waynesboro racked up 22 straight points. Daniel Hager recorded a pin and scored the first six points of the match for the Flucos. The Little Giants recorded a pin and a major decision at 140 and 145 to increase their lead to 32-6. The Flucos ran the table from 152-215 and took the lead 34-32.At Heavyweight Nathan of Waynesboro dealt Carrington his only loss of ther day as Waynesboro regained the lead 38-34. At 103 lbs. Justin Zimmerman needed to pin his opponent for a Fluvanna victory and he did so at the 3:42 mark of his bout, final score Flucos 39, Waynesboro 38.
Noteworthy performances for the day, Justin Zimmerman (103) , Christian Chirico (160) and Ben Lacey ( 215) went undefeated for the day and for the season. Zimmerman and Chirico stand at 20-0 while Lacey is 16-0. Carrington (285) and Logan Walls (189) finished the day 4-1. Walls extended his record to 18-2 while Carrington improved to 15-5.
Future Fluco hopefuls represented the Flucos Saturday in a JV Tournament that was run concurrently during The Albemarle Duals. Dalton Wensel, Caleb Turner, Logan Zimmerman, Drew Walls, Donnie Wilson, Peter Lacey, Jacob Pace, Chase Schulte and Schuyler Holtman represented the Flucos. Donnie Wilson, Dalton Wensel and Chase Schulte all finished second in their respective weight classes.
Flucos Win Moutaineer Classic

The Flucos started the second half of their season off with a bang by winning The 8th Annual Mountaineer Classic at Madison County High School.
The Flucos most difficult match was against Orange County High School. Earlier this season the Flucos fell to the Hornets at home by a score of 46-28. The Hornets were missing two of their starters and the Flucos were short a starter. The match came down to pin or be pinned. Orange juggled their line up as best they could but in the end the Flucos squeaked out a 42-39 victory.
In the championship match the Flucos faced off against Madison County. The Flucos got productivity out of a portion of line up that has been struggling so far this season. Wins fron Skye Wiersma, Jake Mahaffey, Nick Valentine and Devon Manifold contributed to a 44-26 decision for Fluvanna County. Justin Zimmerman ( 15-0) Christian Chirico (15-0) and Ben Lacey ( 12-0) remain undefeated as Logan Walls has a record of (14-1).
Other noteworthy news Christian Chirco hit a milestone by reaching the 100 wins mark in his career his current varsity record is 101-35.
The Flucos next match will be Janurary 8th at Western Albemarle High School for The Albemarle County Duals. The Flucos will face off against Albemarle, Western Albemarle, William Monroe, Ft. Defiance and Waynesboro.

Flucos go 1-1 in first Jefferson District match ups
The Flucos hosted the Orange Hornets and the Charlottesville Black Knights for their first district matches of the season.
In the opening match Fluvanna defeated Charlottesville 59-18. The flucos prevailed in eleven of the fourteen weight classes. In notable fashion Nick Valentine unleashed a vicious headlock to win by pin at the 4:48 mark of his match. Not sure if Nick learned this from brother Charlie but it sure looked that way.
In the second match up of the night Fluvanna ran into a solid Orange County High School team. Last season the Flucos pulled out a squeaker against Orange 31-30. This season the Flucos were not as fortunate. The match started off good for Fluvanna as Chirico, Walls, Lacey, Carrington, Zimmerman and Weirsma ripped off wins in 6 of the first seven matches to take a 28-6 lead. In the next seven matches with one forfeit Orange hit the strength of their lineup and reeled off 7 victoies in a row, 5 pins and one major decision enroute to a 46-28 victory.
Justin Zimmerman (103) and Christian Chirico (160) remained undefeated with perfect marks of 10-0. Ben Lacey (215) is also undefeated with a record of 7-0. Logan Walls is of to a great start at 9-1. Newcomer Darrien Carrington (Heavyweight) is starting to progress and has improved to a record of 5-5, 2-0 in the district. It is possible that Fluvanna could advance all five of these wretlers to the district finals and emerge with as many champions. Last years snow out of The Jefferson District Tournament was a dissappointment to all wretlers in the district. Some highly anticipated match ups include Walls(Flu) vs. Weinner (WA). As a freshman Walls then a Lion lost to Weinner in the district finals. Last season as a Fluco Walls defeated Weinner in their district match. An improved Ben Lacey (Flu) is an interesting match up for favorite Nate Whitmer (Lou). A real surprise for the Flucos could be Carrington at heavyweight. At the present time he is 2-0 in the district and improving everyday in practice, his biggest challenge may come from Ben Sizemore of William Monroe
Due to inclement weather The Flucos will not be traveling
upo Marion this weekend for The Brutal Clash.
12 Noon Thursday
As of the moment The Marion Brutal Clash will take place. Teams are already traveling from Pa. and Tenn. so they will wrestle. As of Noon we are prepared and you should be prepared to go. Stay posted. I will post something later this evening.

Results from Turner Ashby
In their frist competition of the season the Flucos traveled to Bridgewater, Va and faced off against Turner Ashby, Central Woodstock and Warren County.
The Flucos had strong performances from 103lb. Justin Zimmerman, 160lb. Christian Chirico, 189lb. Logan Walls, and 215lb. Ben Lacey. All of these boys were 3-0 for the day.
The highlight of the day was Justin Zimmermans performance against Warren Counties Montague. Earlier this summer Zimmerman had dropped a match to Montague and was seeking revenge. Montague came out strong and had a 6-4 lead late into the third period and seemed to have the match under control, however Zimmerman was not to be denied and with encouragement from his teammates and fans mustered the strength and willpower to turn the tide. In a period of approximately seven seconds Justin escaped executed a takedown and put Montague on his back and won the match 10-6.
Christian Chiricos summer and fall training appear to be paying off; he looked strong and confident in his ability in both of his matches recording a pin against a Central Woodstock opponent and a 9-3 decision against his Warren County opponent his other victory was a forfeit.
Logan Walls and Ben Lacey have acquired an incredible amount of strength in their off season weight training programs, both looked and performed well and are improving their stamina.
Newcomer heavyweight Darien Carrington recorded his first victory of the season by pinning his opponent from Central Woodstock.
The full results for all matches can be viewed at The VAWA web site.http://www.virginiawrestling.com

Stay tuned for the match ups. You are invited to come and watch the wrestle offs at the middle school. They will begin at approximately 4:15.
Scrimmage at Monticello It was a good day as The Flucos experienced their first competition of the season at host Monticello. There was great opportunity for Fluvannas future wrestlers as a number of eighth graders were thown into the fire against some seasoned veterans.
Caleb Turner, Donnie Wilson, Brendon Goode, Taylor Martin, Drew Walls and Peter Lacey all saw action. I was encouraged by their enthusiasm and agressiveness on the mat, no one moved backward and they met their opponents head on.
Newcomer Darien Carrington recorded his first victory in as many attempts and has great promise for the Flucos at Heavyweight this season. Christian Chirico and Justin Zimmerman dominated their opponents, Chirico won by pin and Zimmerman won by tech fall. Ben Lacey also recorded a victory. Some team members were not present due to holiday obligations.
Monticello looked strong at particular weighted classes. Alex Via was victorious as was Forest Diggs.
2010-2011 Squad
After the first week of practice Coaches Conner and Chirico are cautiously optimistic about this years team. We are experiencing a tremendous turnout this season (check the roster).
Prior to the start of the season there appeared to be some holes in the lineup due to graduation and weight changes, however with an influx of participation it appears that we can fill the line up with quality athletes and past performers. There is depth at almost every weight class and the battle for spots will be highly contested.
Another encouraging sign is the participation of eight 8th graders (JV) some of who are capable of contributing as freshman in the coming 2011-2012 season.
Club participation has grown and Coach Chirco has reported a number of 6th and 7th grade prospects that he is grooming. We are in great position to take full advantage of the wrestling room in the new high school next year. We will agressively seek to resurrect our youth program and offer year round access for those who wish to train during the off season.
Scrimmage set for Wednesday 11/24 The Flucos have been invited to scrimmage the Mustangs at Monticello on Wednesday the 24th. The Mustangs are still in the football playoff picture and will be short some of their warriors.
Coach Sutliff has yet to determine a time. It will be in the morning stay tuned for more information.
Thank You
Big Thanks going out to those who filled in at the last minute to man a concession stand at The UVa. football game. Wrestlers in attendance were Codi and Skye Weirsma, Christian Chirico and Matt Anderson. Other volunteers included Mr. Wiersma, Mrs Harris, Coach Chirico and Steven Harris. It was a long day but we were able to raise an additional $500.00 for the team.
Important Information for Parent Meeting
To minimize time lost from practices we ask you to come to the parent meeting to accomplish the necessary paperwork and fee collection activities associated with the beginning of each new season.
Thursday we hope to accomplish a number of things.
1. Collection of student and parent signature of Fluvanna County High School Athletic Department expecatations
2. Collection of participation fee for athletes
3. Sign up sheet for providing some basic needs for the wretlers during tournaments (food)
4. Future fundraising opportunities during the holiday break through UVA concessions, jewelry sale, web advertising etc..
5. Unveiling of new singlets, warm up tops, warm up bottoms, and practice shorts. This year we are encouraing all starters to purchase their warm up top and bottoms ( you will want to they are cool). The fee will be a nominal portion ( 1/2 ) of the true cost. We do have some extra sets but will await the prospective starting line up before making commitments to anyone else.
Coaches Conner and Chirico are excited and ready to go to work to provide your sons with the best opportunity to acheive their goals and team aspirations. Our schedule is tough and demanding and we will need you to support and encourage your sons to start strong and finish stronger.
We understand the position of some families during these difficult economic times. Please do not hesitate to let your son participate because of lack of funds we as the wrestling team will find a way to make it happen for anyone who is willing to dedicate the time and work to be successful at our sport.
The parent meeting on Thursday Nov. 18th is at 6:00 pm at the high school
Repeat
The Flucos are preparing to repeat last years performance and sweep the District Dual meets. Heavy losses from last years squad will make this a daunting task and the Flucos will have to rely upon developing talent from underclassmen.
The Flucos got a shot in the arm by way of transfer as Devonte Hodges a former Mustang is now a Fluco. We are excited to have someone with previous experience at a lower weight where we have some holes in the lineup.
Important dates:
The first day of practice is Monday November 15th. Once again Coach Watkins will be conditioning our grapplers at the high school. Practice will begin at 3:30 at the high schoool and end at 6:30 at the middle school.
Thursday, November the 18th will be the winter sports parent meeting at the high school. We encourage all parents to attend as we head into a new season. I will post a time later.
Also we will be posting a link to a google practice calendar.
Our schedule for this season has already been posted check it out.
We now have defense soap in stock that you can purchase, cost $5.00 per bar..

Set This Date Aside 10/2
As our first fundraiser the wrestling team has committed to manning a concession stand during the U.Va. vs. Florida State football game Sat. October 2nd at Scott Stadium.
We will need to field a crew of 14 (athletes and adults) to man the stand. Sandy and I along with other parents have done this before to raise money for soccer. It is a long day but a lot of fun. I will be contacting those who I know are committed and willing. If you are not available I understand. E mail me your status and that of your wrestler so I can begin to make preparations at pchirico@mail.fluco.org.
If you can not make this date we will be working another event before the wrestling season begins. It is our goal to be able to provide the boys with everything they need and some of what they want. Together I know we can make this a reality.
So far the list includes:
Paul Chirico, Sandy Chirico, Craig Conner, Amy Conner, Christian Chirico.
Email me so I can add your name to the list. Parents keep in mind if you can not participate we still can find a way to use your wrestler .

A New Year Begins
The school year has begun for teachers and coaches and I thought it would be appropriate to catch up on what has happened and what we can look forward to.
Justin Zimmerman and Christian Chirico have both been competing and training in the off season. The duo joined forces on a team that traveled to Georgia to represent Virginia in The Militia Duals. Chirico finished the tournament with a record of 7-1 his only loss 1-0 came at the hands of Georgia AAA state champ Corey Canada.
Zimmerman turned in a strong performance with a 6-2 record and was a valuable asset to the team. Additionally both boys have competed in area tournaments and are continuing to train in a variety of locations including the Orange Wrestling Room and Onesty Hall.
In mid August both Zimmerman and Chirico will compete with The Southside Wrestling Club at The Midnight Bash in Richmond,Va.
On another note it has been brought to my attention that three Flucos attended the wrestling camp at UVA. Zimmerman, Jed Harris and upcoming 8th grader Caleb Turner. This off season commitment will pay dividends for these boys come winter.
Logan Walls, Chase Schulte and Ben Lacey have been pumping iron all spring and summer in preparation for this fall football season. We are proud of these boys and their commitment and desire to compete in multiple sports. My eyes will be upon them as they play.
Athletic Director Scott Morris conducted his annual coaches meeting to share the outlook for this coming season for the Fluco Sports Programs. There has been a meeting for the resurrection of The Flucos Booster Club we encourage all parents of wrestlers to join and get involved. Amidst budget cuts and money shortfalls I have remained optimistic as we continue to receive support from the adverting portion of this web page.
The effects on budgets at other wrestling programs have been reflected in the number of tournaments available (increased) and the cost of attending those tournaments(increased). Fees for tournaments have increased and we will need to find additional ways to raise revenue to meet the needs of the program. Long time supporters Carla and Dianne Crawford have committed to continue the annual jewelry sale which has been a great success. Additionally the Fluvanna County School District and School Board has instituted a participation fee for all athletes of $60.00.
The team has a new set of singlets ordered for the upcoming season. As we continue to fund raise we will be in the market to purchase warm ups and matching shorts. Sponsorship to help defray the cost of these items would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Coach Chirico in regards to this.
A few last minute items. Even with monetary constraints we have managed to put together a rock solid schedule that will test our boys and prepare them for the run to the state tournament. The new schedule has been posted at this web site and at FlucoAthletics.org.
If you find you and your family in a position of not participating because of the participation fee please contact Coaches Conner and Chirco we will find a way to make it work for anyone who wishes to wrestle.
To all our graduated wrestlers we extend a wish of good will and prosperity.
Stay tuned for more news and updates

Important Information Regarding the Jefferson District Tournament
The Jefferson District Tournament is scheduled to take place Wednesday evening 2/10/2010 at The Orange County Fieldhouse.. The weigh ins will be at 4:00 pm and the wrestling will begin at 5:00 pm. My assumption is that school will not be in session at one of the competing schools on Tuesday therefore making the weight class +3 for the tourney. All Jefferson District wrestlers should be prepared to make weight Wednesday at 4:00 pm.

Close Call for Flucos
The Fluvanna Wrestling Team closed out their dual meet season this evening in a quad hosted by Charlottesville High School. The Flucos opened the night against The Orange Hornets. The Hornets gave the Fluocs all they could handle and a couple of late match pins by Orange County wrestlers Ryan Almond (140) and Colin Pierce ( 145) gave Orange County additional points to take a commanding lead of 30-10. Christian Chirico pinned Sean Rafferty to begin closing the gap to 30-16. Fluvanna forfeited the 160 pound match and Orange moved ahead 36-16. Orange forfeited both 171 and 189 and The Flucos gained some ground trailing 36-28. Pins by both David Harlow (285) and Ben Lacey (215) gave the Flucos their first lead of the evening 40-36. The final match of the evening was a highly anticipated bout between Justin Zimmerman (FLU) and Phillip Coleman (Orange). Coleman had a tough assignment to slavage the match for The Hornets and Zimmerman had other things in mind. In a see saw battle Coleman took a first period lead 4-0 with a takedown and 2 near fall points. Zimmerman choose down and escaped and took Coleman down to trail 4-3. The second period closed with Zimmerman trailing 7-3. In the third period Zimmerman began to cut Coleman to do battle on their feet. Ultimately Zimmerman could not close the gap and relinquished a 11-9 decision. It was a great match and everyone is hoping for another exciting match at The District Tournament. Fluvanna forfeited both 160 and 135 and Orange forfeited 171 and 189. You can't get any closer than that.
Fluvanna turned around and defeated Covenant 54-21. Covenant forfeited 4 weight classes and wrestled well.
Host Charlottesville saved Fluvanna for their last match of the night but The Flucos were too much for The Black Knights and won the contest 54-21.
The Flucos ended their dual meet season with their best record (21-7) of their short four season existence. This season The Flucos swept all six Jefferson District opponents defeating William Monroe 63-12, Western Albemarle 48-19, Monticello 45-33, Louisa 44-25, Charlottesville 54-21 and squeaking out a victory over Orange 40-39. The Jefferson District Title is won by winning the year end individual tournament scheduled for this weekend. Impending weather is pushing the tournament to the following week, lets hope we can get it in.
2/4/2010
A Break in the Weather
With a two hour delay Fluvanna will be able to compete in their final Jefferson District meet tonight. The match is at Charlottesville High School. The opponents tonight are Charlottesville, Orange and Covenant. Weigh ins are at 4:00 and wrestling is scheduled to begin at 5:00 pm.

Poor Weather Continues
Jefferson District Athletic Directors met today to address schedules for winter sports due to weather. The Jefferson District Wrestling Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, February 6th, however there is a problem in addition to the weather. All district matches have not been completed and are necessary to seed the tournament.
Fluvanna, Charlottesville and Orange have not met yet and there are some important matches that would affect the seeding process.
As of today the match is rescheduled for Thursday and the district tournament is set for Saturday. If the match is not completed before the weekend the seeding will take place without the results. VHSL rules state that the district tournament must be completed by the 10th of February.
Weather reports for the weekend are not promising and if necessary the tournament may occur either Monday,Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.
If the tournament can not be held on or before the 10th then the district will have no other choice then to send the top four seeds onto the Regional Tournament. I believe this has happened once before. Lets hope for some sun and get this thing done.
2/2/2010
Mother Nature Not Cooperating
For the third time this season bad weather has kept the Flucos off the wrestling mat. The latsest casualty was The New Kent Invitational.
Fluvanna has one district event left this season scheduled for 2/3 at Charlottesville with Orange. Fluvanna know 4-0 is hoping to defeat both teams and sweep the district this season. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we can get this event into the scorebook.
This coming weekend all AA programs are participating in their District Tournaments to narrow the field of participants for the upcoming Regional Tournaments. Once again bad weather is being forecasted for the weekend. If necessary this event may have to take place during the week. There have been conversations about wrestling the tournament this week if weather permits to avoid a district tournament and a regional tournament in the same week.
Last season Fluvanna advanced 9 wrestlers to the regioanls and are hoping to improve on that number. Fluvanna continues to be a member of Region II . Region II is now comprised of four districts, The Evergreen District ( Faquier, Kettle Run, Warren County, Liberty(Bealton), and Brentsville), The Northwestern District ( Skyline, James Wood, Millbrook, John Handley and Sherando), The Dulles District ( Freedom, Loudon County, Parkview, Broad Run, Briarwood, Potomac Falls, and Dominion and The Jefferson District (Fluvanna, Louisa, Monticello, William Monroe, Western Albemarle, Charlottesville and Orange).

Apologies
Wow, it has gone by fast and I apologize for not being more informative. The Flucos are now 14-10 in Dual Meet competition. This weekend the Flucos dropped a couple of close matches to Powhattan (44-34), York (46-39) and Jefferson Forest (39-37) at The Powhattan Duals. Willy Crawford was recognized as the tournaments outstanding wrestler. Crawford moved up a weight class (215) and pinned Yorks 2009 state qualifying wrestler Josh Phillips.
The previous weekend the Flucos were competing at an individual tournament The Free Lance Super 32 at Riverbend High School. In my opinion this has been the toughest tournament of the season in the state. 9th grader Justin Zimmerman placed 8th in the 103 pound weight class while Willy Crawford took the title at 189 lbs. In spectacular fashion Crawford recorded a pin to win the finals and was awarded the tournaments most outstanding wrestler award.
The Flucos were without some starters this weekend that are nursing nagging injuries before making the push to the district and regional tournaments. We are hoping to see the return of starters Jed Harris at 119 and Chase Schulte at 160. David Harlow was visiting Bridgewater as a football recruit and will be in the lineup.
Notable performances and records at this point are Justin Zimmerman 103lbs 24-5, Jonathan Wharton 125lbs. 15-5. Christian Chirico 152lbs. 24-4, Logan Walls 171lbs. 17-6 and Willy Crawford 189lbs. 27-1.
The Flucos will host two Jefferson District teams this Wednesday(1/27), The Green Dragons of William Monroe and the Warrirors of Western Albemarle.
Key match ups will include a rematch of Justin Zimmerman and Perrin Mills of William Monroe. The last time these two met Zimmerman won a hard fought battle 8-6. Trevor Reilly will be attempting to avenge a loss to Adam Weisenborn of W.M. the last time these two met Calvin emerged with a 10-7 victory.
The most anticipated match could be between Logan Walls of Fluvanna and Max Weiner of Western Albemarle at 171lbs. Last year as a Louisa freshman Walls and Weiner met in the distrct finals of the 160lb. weight class. Weiner won that match and moved on to the regional finals where he was bested by Wade Sweede of Brentsville Distrcit. Walls has shown great improvements on his feet and is wrestling well. Weiner has just returned from studying in New England and may not have reached top form yet. Either way this will be an interesting match up for fans in the know.
This weekend The Flucos will be participating in a individual tournament at New Kent High School. Stay turned for results and future dates.

Flucos Set to Wrestle in 7th Mountaineer Classic
The Fluvanna wrestling team will travel to Madison County High School Saturday Jan. 2nd to compete in the 7th Annual Mountaineer Classic.
The Flucos have been sidelined by inclement weather but have been practicing hard and are eager to showcase their talent.
This will be a great opportunity for Jefferson District teams to size one another up. In attendance will be Orange, Monticello, Western Albemarle, Charlottesville and Fluvanna. In the past Coach Sacra has done his best to seperate common season foes but it seems unlikely he will be able to do that Saturday.
Other teams in attendance will be AAA Dinwiddie, AA Courtland and Spotswood and A Madison, Essex, and Randolph Henry.
The Flucos are confident to fill the lineup for the first time this season. At the Flucos only other event at Manchester there were holes in lineup due to illnesses and SAT and ACT testing.
The Flucos have some seasoned veterans returning in Willy Crawford, Jonathan Wharton, Trevor Reilly and Christian Chirico. Last season Crawford won the state title at 171 pounds and will compete this year at 189. Jonathan Wharton was a state qualifying wrestler last season and will return at 125 pounds. Last year Trevor Reilly captured the district title at 112. Christian Chirico is settled in at 152. Last season he finished second in the district and moved on to the regional tournament finishing 2-2, both losses were to state qualifying wrestlers.
The Flucos also boast some new talent in freshman Justin Zimmerman at 103. Justin has looked good in practice and is ready to go. The Flucos are looking for a boost from a transfer student Logan Walls (171) from Louisa. Logan placed second in the Jefferson District tournament as a freshman last season. The rest of the lineup is composed of freshmen Dylan Sharp 112, Jed Harris 119, Matt Tankersley 140, and Chase Schulte at 160. Seniors Montel Armstrong, Peter Brennan and David Harlow will compete respectively at 135, 145 and heavyweight. Codi Weirsma will round out the lineup at 215.
Western Albemarle is the only team with a state qualifying wrestler returning in Max Wiener. Charlottesville has a stable of hopefuls who are having early season success in Chris Grant, Jimmy Carr, The two Ntenda brothers and transfer student Ayden Cousins. Monticello has returning district champ Alex Via and Jacob Marshall. Orange lost state placer Taylor Reuss to Woodberry Forest and is a young team.

Snow Snow and More Snow
The Marion Brutal Clash was canceled this weekend and the Fluocs found themselves two events down early in the season.
Good friendships and great anticipation by the coaching staff secured The Flucos a spot in The Turner Ashby Holiday Tournamnet in Bridgewater, Va. A special thanks goes out to Coach Crockett from TA for making room for The Flucos in the tournamnet.
The TA tournament was originally scheduled for the weekend but weather has pushed the tournament to Wednesday Dec 23rd. This is a double elimination individual tournament.
Turner Ashby High School is located at 800 North Main Street, Bridgewater, Va. The price of admission for fans is $5.00. The first round of wrestling will begin at 10:00am. The finals are set to begin at 4:00pm.

Flucos Start the Season
The Fluco wrestling team is set to start the season at The Manchester Duals this Saturday. The Flucos will be missing state qualifier Jonathan Wharton who will being taking the ACT test this weekend, we wish him good luck. Due to illness Jefferson District Champ Trevor Reilly will miss the event.
The Flucos will do their best to plug these holes with young talent from the wings. The probable starting lineup will be 103 Justin Zimmerman, 112 Dylan Sharp, 119 Jed Harris, 125 Brian Ciaccio, 130 forfeit, 135 Montel Armstrong, 140 Matt Tankersly, 145 Peter Brennan, 152 Christian Chirico, 160 Chase Schulte, 171 Logan Walls, 189 Willy Crawford, 215 Peter Lacey or Codi Weirsma, 285 David Harlow.
This is a first for the Flucos as they match their talent against a field composed of primarily AAA schools in the Richmand area. The Flucos begin the day in a pool with Landstown High School of Virginia Beach, Douglas Freeman last years Colonial District Champs and Stone Bridge a school locatedin Ashburn, Virginia.
The team will wrestle a minimum of four matches tomorrow depending upon 2nd round results.
2009-2010 Wrestle Offs
The mood was electifying as The Flucos began the first day of wrestle offs for the coming season. A trermendous turn out of young talented resulted in numerous wrestle offs as the defeated rallied to try their luck at another weight.
As of today the majority of the roster is set for the first quad of the season at Turner Ashby this Saturday.
The opening match at 103 pitted Justin Zimmerman against Joey Calabretta, Justin defeated Joey and laid claim to the 103 roster spot for this opening weekend.
At 112 Newcomer Peter Southworth did an outstanding job against Sky Weirsma but was unable to seal the deal as Weirsma rallied to win. In a second round bout Newcomer Dylan Sharp who I beleive has had some previous experience defeated Weirsma to advance in the bracket. Tomorrow Sharp will batlle Joe Calabretta for the starting position as Calabretta moves up a weight class to try and win a roster spot.
At 119 Brian Ciaccio and Jed Harris faced off. Jed and Brian are products of the middel school program and have 2 years of experience. Harris was the victor and secured the spot. Both wrestlers will weigh in on Saturday at 119 to fill a void in the lineup at 125.
John Wharton defeated Trevor Reilly for the 130 pound slot. Wharton has not cut to 125 yet. Trevor will wrestle 135 Saturday. The score of the match was lopsided but Reilly turned in a classic perfromance of guts and determination, hats off to both of these guys for an exciting and entertainig match.
At 140lbs. freshmen Daniel Hager and Matt Tankersly squared off, Tankersly won the challenge and emerges as the starting 140 pounder.
At 152 pounds junior Christian Chirico defeated Devon Manifold and secures his position at 152. There were no contestants at 160 and 171. Freshman Chase Schulte will start at 160 and Louisa transfer Logan Walls is the starting 171 pounder.
Senior Willy Crawford will be sitting for the SAT's this weekend which created a hole 189. Codi Wiersma and rookie Ben Lacey faced off for the starting spot. Lacey started off strong but Weirsma's experience was the deciding factor as Codi emerged with the victory. Unwilling to sit home this Saturday Ben Lacey moved up to 215 and defeated Brain Painter to earn a starting positionat 215. David Harlow is the 285 starter.

The first day of practice is November 16th. Please make sure you have a physical or you will not be allowed to participate in the practice sessions. Coaches Conner and Chirico are excited and ready for the upcoming season.
The Flucos are poised to make a real run at the Jefferson District title this season. The Flucos lost solid point producers in Charlie Valentine and David Holding and their shoes will be tough to fill.
The Fluocs are returning State Champ Willy Crawford and state qualifier John Wharton to their lineup. Solid performances from Trevor Reilly and Christian Chirico are a must for the team to be successful.
Newcomer Peter Brennan was a pleaseant surprise last season and the Flucos are looking for him to continue to improve.
Sophmore transfer Logan Walls was a Jefferson District runnerup at 160 lbs. for the Louisa Lions last season. As a freshman Walls was a solid performer for the Lions and the Flucos are looking to capitalize on his presence in a Fluvanna singlet.
The scale tipping factors for the Flucos will be the maturation and development of the incoming freshman class. Last season the Flucos had a number of 8th graders who made a commitment to the team and practiced all season with the varsity squad.
Hopefuls include Justin Zimmerman who has been working hard during the off season. Others who might work into the mix include Jed Harris, Matt Tankersley, Jake Mahaffey, Skye Weirsma and Daniel Hager.
If you thinking about coming out for the team be mindful that none of these positions are secure. Every wrestler is one match away from being displaced from the lineup. We conduct weekly challenge matches so that everyone always has a chance to break into the lineup. If you are up to the challenge show up on November 16th and find out if you have got what it takes.
The Flucos 2009-2010 schedule is posted at both this website and the VAWA website.

NHSCA Dual Practice Session I Recap
Good practice and great intensity from Coach Harshaw. I particularly liked the grind and the steering wheel. I have watched Cody Allala (Hanover) AAA State Champ use the grind to perfection.
Coach Conner and Chirico were very happy to see the number of participants that made the trip. Mothers Day practice should be another high intensity session and we hope you can attend. If not we have two more sessions planned and we hope you can attend one of the two.
Our objective when assembling this team was to attract athletes of high moral character who will serve as positive role models in our communities in the future. We have either spoken with your Coaches or we have had the opportunity to have coached you in the past; and we beleive we have acheived our goal. Our expectations of you on and off the mat are high. We are headed into the Lions Den and we need to be prepared mentally and physically.
The true measure of our success will not be ascertained on Memorial Day weekend, this will just be one of the tests along the way. "Success is never final, failure is never fatal. It's courage that counts." John Wooden

NHSCA Dual Practice Session I
Through the generosity of one individual and the cooperation of the Charlottesvile Wrestling Club and The University of Virginia we will be having our first practice Sunday May 3rd from 4pm-6pm in The U.Va. wrestling room in Onesty Hall.
We have secured four dates and each session will be an intense and spirited workout run by either Coach Steve Garland, Scott Moore or Jim Harshaw.
We hope that everyone can attend at least one session if not more as we begin to prepare for The NHSCA Duals.
To make each session more productive I am asking each wrestler to email me with a specific move that you are having difficulty with either executing, perfecting, finishing or defending.
Please email me at paul_chirico@yahoo.com
The U.Va. wrestling room is located in Onesty Hall which is directly behind Universty Hall where the Cavaliers use to play their home basketball games. University Hall is directly across the road from The (new) John Paul Jones Arena.
The John Paul Jone Arena is located at the corner of Massie Road and Route 29 (Emmet St.) in Charlottesville. I will be posting a link with more specific directions in the future.
My Apologies

NHSCA Dual Team Solidifies
We have ten confirmed roster spots and we are reday to begin coordinating the cost and logisitical aspects of our venture.
Our plan is to eliminate the need and cost of singlets by having each member wear a personal singlet of their own. In the future we may be able to secure 14 singlets of the same color for the event; however at this point this is not a priority.
To reduce lodging costs we plan to camp out in tents at a nearby campground. This is not mandatory if you and your parents choose to lodge in a hotel that is fine. If you and your parent, parents or guardian do plan on camping with us we will need to know as soon as posiible to secure enough campsite space by April 21st.
The campsite we are utilizing allows six campers per site. Food will be an individual item in terms of cost.
To cover the cost of the entry fee into the tournament and lodging we have determine that each wrestler will be responsible for a $60.00 entry fee. A camping fee of $40.00 per person will apply to anyone who chooses to camp.
We have not addressed the issue of transportation yet because we do not know what each individual wrestling family plans on doing ( accompany there son, staying nearby or staying at home ). We anticipate having the ability to carpool some wrestlers if there is a need. As we move closer we will ascertain that need.
We are attempting to coordinate some kind of a practice-get to know each other prior to the event at a centrally located facility. It will not be mandatory.
I will continue to post as I gather more information. If you are truly committed you can determine your needs (camping, no camping)and forward you payment to Coach Conner. Coach Conner can be reached either at 1-434-591-1150 or cconner@mail.fluco.org or by post at 2731 Ruritan Lake Road, Scottsville, Virginia 24590
NHSCA National Duals Team
Coaches Conner, Crawford and Chirico are putting a regional team together to compete at The National High School Coaches Association Dual Team Tournament. The event will be held over Memorial Day weekend, May 22nd - 25th in Salisbury, Maryland. The plan is to tent camp and compete. There will be a fee to particiapte in the event and you will be required to bring money or food to eat.
This event is demandinng and attracts good quality teams from surrounding states. It is our objective to first offer positions on this team to our own Fluco wrestlers. We have already put the word out to other Jefferson District wrestlers and even some wrestlers from over in the Valley District.
We are confident we can field a full lineup and we are eager to get that lineup solidified. You have to let us know now if you wish to attend so we may offer this to ohers.
Call Coach Conner 591-1150 if you are interested and serious about participating in this event.

In their thrid season The Flying Flucos advanced nine wrestlers to the Region II Tournament at Park View High School and finished ninth out of the 23 teams participating. The only Jefferson District participants finishing ahead of Fluvanna were the Lions of Louisa County.
Fluvannas wrestlers amassed a total of 63 points as they advanced through the brackets on Friday evening and throughout the day Saturday. In the end region placewinners included Senior Charlie Valentine who finished 5th in the 135 lb. weight class. Junior Jonathan Wharton finished 4th in the 125 lb. weight class while junior Willy Crawford was the Flucos lone Regional Champion. A finish of fourth or better qualify's a contestant to participate in the AA State Tournament being held in Salem, Virginia.
Other Flucos who wrestled and contributed to the 63 points were Trevor Reilly, David Holding, Christian Chirico, Nick Greco and David Harlow.
The Same But Not The Same
The Flying Flucos repeated their performance from last year by advancing nine wrestlers to the Regional Tournament. Last season the Flucos sent one wrestler to the district finals (Trevor Reilly) and came away with a 2nd place finisher. The other eight candidates finished either third or fourth.
At this years Jefferson District Tournament the Flucos sent five wrestlers to the finals and captured three firsts and two seconds.
In a sparse 112 pound weight class Trevor Reilly advanced to the finals with a perfect 6-0 district record and awaited the outcome of a bout between Jacob Harlow of Louisa and Perrin Mills of William Monroe. In the finals Reilly (F) pinned Harlow (L) at the 2:27 mark of the match. A milestone in the program Trevor Reilly is the first Jefferson District Champion from Fluvanna County. At 125 Jonathan Wharton defeated Shane O'Hara fo Monticello for the second time this season and while O'Hara has worked hard and has improved tremendously Wharton disposed of O'Hara with a pin at the 1:40 mark of the match.
Charlie Valentine avenged an earlier season loss to Jordan Breeding of Monticello in a highly contested bout in the semi finals (12-10) and advanced to the finals to meet Randy Fisher. Valentine had lost a tough bout to Fisher earlier in the season and was looking for revenge number two in the same day. Valentine a senior bound for The United States Marine Corp gave it all he had and came up short (12-7 ) to finish second.
Bumping up to 152 from his regular season spot at 145 sophomore Christian Chirico advanced to the finals with two first period pins of Ben Stone of Louisa and Doug Sizemore of William Monroe. In the finals he met senior Travis Tucker of Orange. Two five point moves; a defensive takedown and a near fall and a reversal and a near fall put the match out of reach as Chirico battled back only to lose 12-6.
A highly anticipated rematch at 171 pitted Willy Crawford of Fluvanna against Logan McNutt of Louisa. Earlier in the season McNutt pinned Crawford in front of the home fans at Louisa. With the district tournament being held at Louisa the crowd was anticipating another victory and championship for McNutt. After a 0-0 first period McNutt had choice and chose the down position. Crawford rode McNutt the entire period and chose the down position to start the third period . An early period escape gave Crawford a 1-0 advantage and put McNutt in a position of needing to press for takedown. McNutt began his assault and Crawford caught him offgaurd at the line with a well executed ankle pick and increased hid lead to 3-0. Crawford then elected to to surrender a point to McNutt and continue in the bout on their feet. McNutt pressing and Crawford defending the match ended 3-1 in favor of Crawford.
Newcomer Peter Brennan was a surprise to the squad this year and through sheer effort and a desire to win placed third. Earlier in the day Chris McCann of William Monroe tech falled Peter. Brennan and McCann both dropped into the consolation round and met in the 3-4 match. Brennan caught McCann in a headlock and pinned him to secure third place.
At 130 pounds David Holding had a tough first round draw and wrestled Taylor Reuss of Orange County who went on to win the ditrict title. Holding wrestled a magnificent match but could not muster a point and succumbed 4-0. David then wrestled a consolation match against Garrett Brown of Monticello to secure third place.
Nick Greco recorded a consolation round pin of Mike Collier of William Monroe to advance to the 3-4 match only to lose to Chris Grant of Charlottesville. A very competitive 285 pound weight class with only four participants allowed David Harlow to advance despite two loses.
Battling back spasms and injuries senior Mike Hager was unable to continue to compete and dropped out of the tournament. Freshman Alex Williams dropped his first two matches and was eliminated as did Codi Weirsma.
Twelve participants and nine wrestlers advancing made Coach Conner pleased about his teams effort. "The boys have worked hard all year long anticipating this event. Five wrestlers in the finals with four of the five returning next season along with three of the four placewinners returning is a good base for next season. I was proud of their effort and how they conducted themselves on and off the mat."
The Flucos will travel to Sterling, Va. for the regional tournament held at Park View High School where they will square off against their counterparts from the Dulles and Northwest Districts. The top four finishers will advance to the state tournament in Salem, Va. the following weekend. Good Luck to all the Flucos.

Not Yet
In a bid to go undefeated in the Jefferson District The Flying Flucos fell short at the hands of powerhouse Louisa 57-21.
In their third season on the mat the Flucos have made tremendous strides and are closing the gap against their archrival Louisa Lions. With forfeits at 103 and 140 and with a starter out of the lineup at 160 the flucos knew that their chances for success were limited. The score remained close through the first nine bouts. A decision at 145 by Christian Chirco and a pin by first year wrestler Peter Brennan at 152 pulled the Fluoc's within six points 27-21. Going foward the Flucos could not muster another victory as they encountered Louisa's talented upper weight wrestlers. The Lions went on a run and recorded five straight pins fom Logan Walls, Logan McNutt, Kevin Whitmer, Charlie Elkins and Nate Whitmer adding 30 additional points for the Lions.
Earlier in the evening the Fluco's battled The Mustangs of Monticello and recorded their fifth Jefferson District victory of the year. Monticello forfeited a number of weight classes and battled valiantly but ultimately succumbed 37-33.
Notable matches of the evening pitted Jacob Marshall of Monticello against Ethan Faulls of Louisa. Marshall wrestled tough and was leading most of the way. A late period reversal by Faulls elevated him to a one point victory. In the Fluvanna/Louisa match Willie Crawford led most of the way but a late third period manuever by Logan McNutt caught Crawford off guard and McNutt pinned Crawford. A highly anticipated bout between two ranked wrestlers in the state at 171 pounds will probably occur again in the Jefferson District finals and may possibly occur in the Region II finals. The fans and the wrestlers are looking foward to the possible rematch.

Fluco's Improve District Record to 4-0
With previous victories over The Orange Hornets and Charlottesville Black Knights, the Fluvanna Wrestling Team improved their district record to 4-0 with victories over the William Monroe Green Dragons and the Western Albemarle Warriors.
In the first match of the evening, the Flucos faced off against William Monroe. After trading forfeits and pins, the score was tied 12-12 after the first 4 bouts. Once ahead, Fluvanna never looked back and ended the match with a 50 -28 victory.
Congratulations to Coach Sizemore, his staff, and his wrestlers. This is William Monroe's second season, their returning wrestlers showed tremendous improvement and they were able to fill 12 of the 14 weight classes. With a keen interest in competition and a committment to sportsmanship, the Green Dragons are an assett to the Jefferson District.
The second match of the evening pitted the Warriors against the Flucos. In a see-saw battle, the score remained 33-30 through the first eleven bouts in favor of Fluvanna. Wins by Weirsma, Greco and Harlow sealed the deal and the Flucos prevailed with a 48-30 victory.
The Flucos' two final district matches will be at Louisa High School on Wednesday the 21st. Victories over the Monticello Mustangs and Louisa Lions would give the Flucos a perfect district record. The key to achieving this goal will be forfeits and matchups, and the Flucos will have to have outstanding performances at all weight classes. For quite some time, Louisa has been (and is) the strongest team in the district. The Mustangs always have a respectable team and will be a formidable foe. Coach Conner and Coach Chirico are pleased to be in this position in their third season and attribute their success to the hard work and committment put forth by all the members of the team.
