Tournaments
The greater portion of competitive events for wrestling, fall under the guise of tournaments. Typically held on weekends these events begin early in the morning and continue late into the evening. They require a dedication and sacrifice of time that many athletes are not willing to forgo. In some cases these tournaments can extend over a two day period depending upon their size. Wrestling tournaments are categorized as either Pool (Team Tournaments) or Individual Tournaments. (see below)
Fluvanna County High School is scheduled to appear in four tournaments this year. Three of these tournaments are pool our dual team tournaments. On Dec. 7 th and 8 th we will be competing in a team tournament at Fort Defiance High School . The competiton promises to be tough with a host of Valley teams that have represented the region well at the state tournament. This will be a real test for our men.
On Jan 5 th the Flucos will travel to Madison County High School to participate in the Madison Duals.12 teams divided into three 4 team pools will compete for a chance to reach the finals in the top pool. A number of quality single A schools get a chance to show off their premier wrestlers.
The following weekend Jan 12 th the Flucos travel to Louisa to wrestle in The David Wells Memorial Tournament. David Wells was a great supporter of high school wrestling in the Central Virginia Area his whole life. Dave was a referee and friend for many years until he was carried home while battling cancer. Up until the end I saw Dave at events throughout the region. He will be missed and it is a great honor for us to be invited to compete in this first tournament in his honor.
The Big Blue. Do I need to say any more. On Jan. 25 th and 26 th we will be traveling into the sacristy of Virginia High School wrestling as The Flucos will be participating in a 32 team individual tournament held at Christiansburg High School in Southwest Virginia. For the past five seasons Christiansburg High School has been the AA State Champs and a nationally ranked high school team. Using their clout and reputation Christiansburg has assembled a field of teams from N. Carolina , Delaware , Ohio , West Virginia and Virginia . The competition will be fierce and will encompass some of the best wrestlers in the state.
Pool Tournaments
Teams are placed in pools. Teams compete in dual meet competition against every team in their pool which determines the rank of teams in each pool. Teams from each pool wrestle against the same-ranked team(s) from the other pool(s) to determine team placement. These types of tournaments guarantee wrestlers a certain number of matches, barring forfeits.
Individual Tournaments
Individual tournaments are of the double elimination type. A double-elimination tournament is a competition in which a participant ceases to be eligible to win the tournament's championship upon having lost two matches. It stands in contrast to a single-elimination tournament, in which only one defeat results in elimination.
A double-elimination tournament is broken into two sets of brackets, the Winners Bracket and Losers Bracket ( W and L Brackets for short; also sometimes Upper Bracket and Lower Bracket , respectively). After the first round, the winners proceed into the W Bracket and the losers proceed into the L Bracket. The W Bracket is conducted in the same manner as a single-elimination tournament, except of course that the losers of each round "drop down" into the L Bracket.
As with single-elimination tournaments, most often the number of competitors is equal to a power of 2 (4, 8, 16, etc) so that there are an even number of competitors at every round.
